HPA-nxV200 R2 Signature Rev 3 MOSFET Amplifier ...continued.

Holton Precision amplifiers are designed and built by Anthony Holton in Tasmania.

The design and finish of his boards should be the benchmark for everybody. Naturally, all boards are fully calibrated and tested before despatch.

Construction

I took my time and built my amp over three days. I managed to get a 500VA toroidal transformer from RS Online for $65 including free delivery to Queensland. The only problem is that my amp has a slight mechanical ac buzz from the toroidal but it's not intrusive. The amp itself is just about silent, even at full power.

It was necessary to drill a few holes and tap a thread in the heat sinks to mount the MOSFETS. If crimp connecters are used, the only soldering is for audio/out plus power socket.

The build was trouble free and could be managed in a much shorter time. But, what's the hurry?

How Does it Sound?

Anthony's amplifiers are used by some recording studios, which could explain why they are sound so clean, uncoloured and relaxed in their performance. No fatigue inducing harshness from these amps, just beautiful music.

I had previously used a Son of Beast OTL valve amp which was an extraordinary performer and I was concerned that the change to Solid State would be a shock to my ears. Not so. The transition was extremely enjoyable to my ears..

The KEF LS50's and Holton amp were chosen because of their ability to audibly disappear, and add no colouration of their own. This has allowed me to experiment with DIY interconnects and help me acknowledge that interconnects and wire types CAN affect the quality of reproduced sound.

In my experience the Holton amp and LS50's are a match made in heaven with LDR Optocoupled Preamps because of this ability to not interfere.
